Wat Rong Khun, aka, the 'White temple' to most foreigners who travel to Thailand.
Opened to public in 1997, the temple is contemporary and unconventional, designed by Chiang Rai's own artist, Chalermchai Kosipipat.
Not just another temple! The inside of the temple is unconventionally decorated with paintings and figurines you wouldn't expect to see in a Thai temple. Though photography is strictly prohibited on the inside of the temple, you can still photograph the outside the the iconic White temple area.
The completion of the temple has not been set, though the main attraction and galleries are opened to visitors. When complete, the temple will consist of nine buildings; meditation hall, art gallery, monks' living quarters, relic halls, etc.
What we love: Contemporary art designs throughout the temples. Different from most Thai temples we have seen but yet still convey Buddhism teachings, stories, and views. If you travel to Chiang Rai, the White Temple is a must-see. One of the awesome places to check-in your travel notebook.
***The temple has art galleries, souvenirs, and restaurants in side.
